Kate Winslet biography

Real Name:  Kate Elizabeth Winslet

Date of Birth:  5 October 1975

Place of birth:  Reading, Berkshire England

Profession:  Actress

When Kate Winslet was playing Rose Dewitt Bukater in Titanic, many viewers believed that this talented actress actually was Rose. Kate Winslet was one actress who showed the world that you don’t have to be abnormally thin or have silicone breast implants to become a celebrity. She proved to everyone that your personality and dedication towards your profession are in fact, the core aspects to becoming a celebrity.

Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born as the second daughter of Roger Winslet and Sally Bridges Winslet in October 1975.  She came from an acting family. Neither of her parents, who were both avid stage actors, had any doubt as to her choice of profession.  Her grandparents also ran the Repertory Theatre at Reading Berkshire. Therefore, her decision to become a professional actress at such a young age was a natural decision influenced by her family.

At the age of 11, Kate enrolled herself in Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead, England and became involved in some of the school’s successful stage productions. A screen debut of TV serials convinced her to leave the theatre school early. She later appeared in several more TV serials.  She experienced her first film break at 17 when Peter Jackson selected her for a starring role in “Heavenly Creatures.” She was chosen from a pool of more than 150 applicants because of her intense enthusiasm and vigor. Her role involved playing a teenager named Juliet Hulme who experiences a dangerous infatuation with her best friend. The film was released in 1994 and became an instant success. Her debut helped her to win more important roles in larger scale productions. The following year, she was involved in two more successful ventures, “A Kid in King Arthur’s Court” and “Sense and Sensibility.” Her performance in “Sense and Sensibility” earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

The pinnacle of her success came when she starred in James Cameron’s Titanic in 1997. She gained widespread recognition for her performance in this blockbuster romantic drama. She was nominated for another Academy Award in 1998 for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She proved her magnanimity by choosing to act in smaller projects directed by less famous producers rather than appear in other blockbusters, despite her phenomenal success.

Kate fell in love with assistant director, James Threapleton and married him in 1998.  After giving birth to her daughter in 2000, she took some well-deserved time off from her acting career. In Sept 2001, Kate Winslet announced her decision to separate from James, and the couple divorced in December.  She was again nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Iris” for the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. In May 2003, she married the successful director, Sam Mendes. Their son, Joe was born on December 2003.  Kate Winslet remains an icon of success. She has recently been nominated for many Best Actress awards for her impressive performance in the 2006 movie, “Little Children.”
