Alicia Keys Confesses To Link With Knife Culture
While Alicia Keys is now one of America’s best known musical stars, her confession that she carried a knife as a child is a further reflection of the knife culture so entrenched into today’s society. Keys has been opening her heart about her tough up bringing in Manhattan’s notorious “Hell’s Kitchen” neighborhood, ahead of her acting debut in the forthcoming “Smokin’ Aces” movie.
As a child, Ms Keys said that she felt more comfortable carrying a knife for protection on the tough streets of her neighborhood, and liked the idea of having “something to surprise them with”. Unfortunately for Alicia Keys her mother was not too sympathetic about her idea of protection and immediately confiscated the knife when she found out.
While Ms Keys was only commenting on a situation which has been around for many years, some observers have criticized the further “glamorization” of the knife culture by so called role models of society. Rap stars, movie stars and the like have all been in the press of late, confessing to their links with the knife culture of the US. The young of society are heavily influenced by their “heroes” which is causing further difficulty in the education system of the US, with detection systems common place in notoriously difficult neighborhood schools.
Ms Keys has also been talking about her climb to stardom and her initial problems adjusting to superstar status. While originally known as somewhat of a tomboy, she claims that this was her way of protecting herself from the dangers of a young girl in the limelight. Nowadays Alicia Keys seems more at ease with her life of fame and fortune, although her movie acting debut is a big step into the unknown.
In an industry notoriously critical of new comers to the acting scene, it will be interesting to see how Ms Keys is received over the coming weeks, and whether this will be a long term career path for her.
