Carrie Fisher’s List of Essentials

Carrie Fisher’s List of Essentials

Carrie Fisher was among the first generation of Hollywood celebrity children. The daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher; she grew up in the presence of Hollywood’s greatest.

An accomplished actress and writer in her own right; Carrie Fisher is probably best known for her role of Princess Leah in the science fiction series, Star Wars.  She also had supporting roles in the films Shampoo and When Harry Met Sally.

She may be an actress of the modern film era, but her heart is with the classics of yesteryear. Fisher says that she grew up watching the old films with her parents. Fisher says that her mother was shocked when she realized that her daughter (then in her teens) did not know who James Dean, the actor, was.  She was ‘punished’ by being allowed to stay up late to watch Rebel Without a Cause (the movie which made James Dean a house hold name).

So, it would seem, that Carrie Fisher would be a natural choice to co-host TMC’s series, The Essentials.  However how natural the choice may seem to the rest of us; it wasn’t to Carrie Fisher. She says that she is nervous and concerned that her knowledge (about the classic films) will not stand up against the pros.

In the TMC series, The Essentials, classic films are critiqued by modern day industry authorities. Carrie Fisher got to pick which movies would be featured in the series. Her choices include: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady, and (the original 1932 version of ) King Kong.

Carrie Fisher explained why she has such a great lover for the old classic movies, “These movies that we watched for ‘The Essentials,’ they’re older movies that come from another time,” she says. “They were when people were passionate about movies. You made a movie because [MGM co-founder] Louis B. Mayer wanted to see it. He was passionate about it. It was just an amazing era.”
