Nelly Furtado floating on air…
Nelly Furtado, 28-year old pop singer, took the stage by storm, by taking all five of Canada’s Juno music awards on Sunday evening. Descending to the stage in a black tutu adorned with feathers, Nelly paid tribute to her first smash hit in 2000, “I’m Like a Bird.” This past Saturday at a pre-broadcast celebration, she was honoured with a trophy for the best single “Promiscuous,” a duet with producer Timbaland, and another trophy for pop artist of the year. Nelly was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia of Portuguese and Azorean parents, but currently considers Toronto as home base. More than 10 million copies of this popular recording artist’s 3rd album, “Loose,” have been sold to date. This was the 36th annual Juno awards event, where the top music awards are given, an event similar to the Grammys in the U.S. Nelly had been here twice before, but each time, as she sat in the audience, someone else took the prize for best album.
This year she was invited to host the awards ceremony held in the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Much to her surprise, she was delighted to hear her name announced as the winner, not once, but five times. Always a bit humble, she admits to being shocked at first upon hearing of winning these awards. Although this amazing young star had previously received a Brit award for top international female solo singer, she could hardly believe that this was really happening; she had won in every category she was nominated for. Thrilled at winning, Nelly expressed her gratitude to the judges and her fans. As Nelly entertained the Juno audience with several costume changes, a bit of comedy, and medleys of her hit songs, the evening was indeed a success, a dream of a lifetime.
