Streisand cancels Rome concert

Barbara Streisand has cancelled a concert in Rome on June 15th. The concert was to open her European tour.

Organizers apologized to Italian fans, and explained that the cancellation was as a result of production delays that left them unready for the opening date.

Italian consumer groups had been protesting the show saying the ticket prices were absurdly high. Tickets for the show at the public Stadio Flaminio were retailing from $200 all the way up to $1200 per seat. Organizers have told Italian fans that their tickets would be refunded, and that they would have the opportunity to purchase tickets for other shows on the European tour.

Protesting consumer groups had been calling the ticket prices “shameful” and had been urging authorities to deny the star access to the public stadium. The stadium will seat 24 000 spectators and is municipal property. The group said, “The stadium is public property and cannot be used for immoral deals that are shameful to a civilized country,”

Streisand will instead launch her European tour on the 18th in Zurich instead; although organizers insist that they are not canceling the show in response to protest or pressure.

Stiesand’s fans should be accustomed to shelling out some serious money to see her perform. The high ticket prices on her North American tour last summer led her to be second highest grossing touring performance over the last year. Only the Rolling stones grossed more than Streisand’s 92.5 million dollars in ticket sales. The average ticket price on her North American tour was $298.

After her tour premiere in Zurich, Streisand will perform in Austria, France, Ireland and Britain. Organizers were not available for comment on Monday, and have been communicating with fans through there website.
